CISI X CMENY

The Chinese Music Ensemble of New York (CMENY) is one of the oldest and largest Chinese traditional music ensembles in the United States, dedicated to promoting Chinese traditional music and fostering cultural exchange. In addition to presenting high-caliber performances on a regular basis, the ensemble runs youth training programs that introduce young people in the U.S. to Chinese traditional instruments and help them experience the richness and charm of Chinese musical culture.

In 2024, the Carnegie International Student Institute (CISI) supported the development of CMENY’s youth ensemble, enabling the expansion of Chinese traditional music education programs for young people in New York. Through this collaboration, CISI aims to provide overseas youth with greater access to Chinese culture, spark cross-cultural interest and identity, and support the transmission and innovation of traditional arts among the next generation.

New York, NY

We support children in discovering their cultural roots through music. The Chinese Music Ensemble of New York (CMENY) has long been dedicated to promoting traditional music education in the United States, with a particular focus on Chinese American youth. Through regular rehearsals, winter and summer workshops, and community performances, second-generation immigrants are given opportunities to connect with the Chinese language, history, and their own sense of identity through music.

Since 2024, CISI has launched a collaborative program with CMENY to specifically support youth traditional music education initiatives. Our funding helps cover instrument purchases, teacher compensation, and curriculum development, opening an auditory gateway to Chinese culture for dozens of Chinese American children.

The year 2024 marks not only a starting point, but also a shared commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage and empowering the next generation.
